How to Get a Negative Review Removed From Trustpilot

Trustpilot has one of the more structured review-flagging processes of the major platforms, which is good news if a review genuinely violates its guidelines — and not much help if it’s simply a real customer who had a bad experience and is entitled to say so. Here’s how to tell the difference and what to actually do about each.

What Trustpilot will and won’t remove

Trustpilot’s guidelines prohibit reviews that are: not based on a genuine experience with the business, posted by a competitor or someone with a conflict of interest, containing hate speech, threats, or personal attacks, off-topic or unrelated to an actual transaction, or posted in exchange for compensation without disclosure.

What Trustpilot will not remove: an accurate, genuine review simply because it’s negative, unflattering, or you disagree with the customer’s take. This trips people up constantly — a real customer having a real (if extreme) reaction to a real experience is exactly the kind of content Trustpilot exists to host, even when it stings.

Step 1: Determine which category the review is in

Before doing anything else, check whether the reviewer is actually a verified customer. Trustpilot allows businesses to see (and sometimes challenge) whether a review is tied to a verifiable order or interaction. If you have no record of this person ever being a customer, that’s your strongest signal it may violate the guidelines.

Step 2: Respond publicly first

Regardless of whether you plan to flag it, respond to the review professionally and promptly. Trustpilot displays business responses prominently, and a calm, specific reply does real work even if the review itself never comes down — it shows every future reader how you handle problems.

Step 3: Flag it through Trustpilot’s official process

If the review genuinely violates the guidelines, businesses can report it directly through their business account. You’ll need to specify which guideline it violates and provide supporting context — order numbers, account details, timestamps, anything that supports your claim. Vague reports (“this seems fake”) get far less traction than specific ones (“we have no record of any customer or order matching this name or date”).

Step 4: Escalate if the first flag doesn’t work

Trustpilot’s moderation team doesn’t always get it right on the first pass. If your report is denied and you believe it was made in error, some plans include access to a direct escalation contact. Otherwise, persistence through the standard reporting channel, with more supporting documentation, is usually the only lever available.

Step 5: Know when to stop pushing

If a review is real, from a real customer, describing a real experience — even one that’s unfair, one-sided, or exaggerated — it’s very unlikely to come down, and continuing to dispute it publicly usually does more reputational damage than the original review. At that point, the better use of energy is a strong public response, plus continuing to generate new, genuine reviews that reflect current customer experience.

The pattern that actually protects a Trustpilot score

Businesses with the healthiest Trustpilot presence aren’t the ones with zero negative reviews — they’re the ones that respond to every review, positive or negative, and consistently generate new genuine reviews so that any one bad experience gets diluted by dozens of accurate, current ones. A single negative review from two years ago matters a lot less when it’s surrounded by fifty recent ones telling a different story.
